Engraving is a method that is used to permanently mark a material. An operator has a choice of using either a mechanical engraver with a cutting tool or a laser engraver to engrave a grooved mark into a material. The operator will fill the engraved groove in the material with paint or engravers crayon creating a visual contrast, and sometimes the engraved groove is left unfilled. Some material (Lamiciod) is engraved through the top surface exposing a different color core. This color contrast allows one to see the picture, letter, or number that was engraved.
